How to Get to Merzouga Desert from Agadir
Agadir To Merzouga Desert
At Quiet Merzouga Desert

Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are about 690 km (430 miles) east of Agadir. There is no direct train or flight, so the journey is made by road across the Anti-Atlas and the valleys of the south. Here are your options, with the pros and cons of each.
1. By private car or private tour (recommended)
The drive takes 10–11 hours without stops, so it is best split over two days. The classic route is:
- Agadir → Taroudant – the walled “little Marrakech”, with a lively souk.
- Taliouine – Morocco’s saffron capital; stop at a cooperative to see how it is harvested.
- Ouarzazate – the “gateway to the desert”, with the Taourirt Kasbah and film studios; a good place to spend the first night.
- Dades Valley and Todra Gorge – red cliffs, kasbahs and palm groves.
- Tinghir → Erfoud → Merzouga – arrive in time for a camel ride at sunset.
With a private driver you stop when you like and don’t have to worry about the road. See our tours from Agadir, from 2 to 7 days.
2. By bus
There is no direct bus from Agadir to Merzouga. Take a CTM or Supratours bus to Ouarzazate (about 6–7 hours), then a second bus on to Merzouga (about 7 hours more). It is the cheapest way, but it takes a full day or more, so plan a night in Ouarzazate.
3. By rental car
Driving yourself is possible: the roads are good but long, with mountain sections between Taroudant and Ouarzazate. Fill up whenever you can in the south, avoid driving at night, and allow time for police checkpoints.
4. By plane
Errachidia airport is about 130 km (2 hours) from Merzouga, but flights from Agadir usually connect through Casablanca, so the trip still takes most of a day. From Errachidia, book a private transfer to Merzouga.
Which option is best?
- Comfort and sightseeing: a private tour with a night in Ouarzazate or the Dades Valley.
- Tight budget: the bus via Ouarzazate.
- Short on time: fly to Errachidia, then transfer.
Practical tips
- The best seasons are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November).
- Carry cash in dirhams – ATMs are rare between Ouarzazate and Merzouga.
- Bring a warm layer: desert nights are cool even after a hot day.
