Quiet Merzouga Desert

Marrakesh Trip to Fez via Merzouga

Marrakesh Trip to Fez via Merzouga

Three days from Marrakech to Fez by way of the Sahara: the High Atlas Mountains, the kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, a camel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset and a night in a desert camp, then the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas on the way to Fez.

Day 1: Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka – Aït Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley

We pick you up at your accommodation at 8:00 am and drive over the High Atlas Mountains by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, stopping for views and small Berber hamlets. We visit Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site used in more than 20 films and once an important stronghold on the old caravan route that brought salt, gold, ivory and silk from sub-Saharan Africa to Marrakech.

We pass through Ouarzazate, known as Morocco’s “Hollywood” for its film studios, then continue through Skoura and Kelaa M’Gouna to the Dades Valley for dinner and a night in a hotel.

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga

After breakfast we drive to the Todra Gorge, one of the most spectacular canyons in Morocco, where you have free time to walk along the river. We continue to Erfoud, where the Sahara begins, and stop for lunch.

In the afternoon we reach Merzouga. Here you swap the car for a camel and ride across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi just in time for sunset. The night is spent in a traditional Berber camp in a tent with a private bathroom, with a Moroccan dinner, local music and stories around the campfire.

Day 3: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Ifrane – Fez

After sunrise, a shower and breakfast at camp, we head north through the Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas Mountains via Midelt and Azrou. The landscape changes from desert to green plains and cedar forests before you arrive in Fez, one of Morocco’s great historic cities, in the evening.
