Quiet Merzouga Desert

A night in a camp among the dunes of Erg Chebbi is the highlight of most trips to Morocco. But what does “luxury camp” really mean, and how is it different from a traditional Berber camp? We live in Merzouga and welcome guests in the desert every night, so here is an honest guide.

Where are the camps?

The camps are set up between the dunes of Erg Chebbi, about 30 to 60 minutes from the village of Merzouga. Far from the road and the village lights, they offer silence, a huge starry sky and the best views of sunset and sunrise over the sand.

What does a luxury camp include?

  • A private tent for you, with real beds, warm blankets and carpets.
  • An en-suite bathroom inside or next to your tent, with toilet, washbasin and hot shower.
  • Electricity to charge your phone and camera, usually from solar panels.
  • Dinner and breakfast: soup, salads, tajine or couscous and fruit in the evening; bread, pancakes, eggs, jam and coffee or mint tea in the morning.
  • The evening program: campfire, Berber drums and songs, and time to watch the stars.
  • Sandboarding on the dunes next to the camp.

Luxury or traditional camp?

A traditional camp is simpler: nomad-style tents, mattresses or simple beds and shared toilets. It is perfect for travelers who want an authentic, budget-friendly night. A luxury camp is better for couples, families and anyone who wants comfort after a long day on the road. The desert, the camel ride and the sky are the same in both.

How do you get to the camp?

Most guests arrive on a camel ride of about one hour at sunset. Your big luggage goes to the camp by 4×4, so you only need a small bag. If you prefer, you can also reach the camp by 4×4, which is a good option for young children or people who cannot ride a camel. The next morning you return the same way after sunrise and breakfast.

A typical evening

Afternoon arrival in Merzouga, mint tea, camel ride into the dunes and sunset from the top of a dune. Then dinner in the camp, music around the fire, and a quiet night. Wake up early to climb a dune for sunrise before breakfast.

Tips for your night in the desert

  • Bring a warm layer: desert nights are cool most of the year and cold in winter.
  • Keep a torch, a scarf and your camera in your small bag.
  • Tell us in advance about food allergies or vegetarian meals.
  • Stay two nights if you can: the second day is perfect for a 4×4 tour to the nomads and Gnawa music.
