Quiet Merzouga Desert

Which Is the Closest Airport to Merzouga Desert?

Merzouga sits on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in south-eastern Morocco, far from the big cities. There is no airport in Merzouga itself, but four airports are within a day’s drive. Here is how they compare, so you can choose the one that suits your trip.

1. Errachidia Airport (ERH) – the closest

  • Distance to Merzouga: about 130 km, roughly a 2-hour drive.
  • Flights: a small domestic airport (Moulay Ali Cherif). Royal Air Maroc flies from Casablanca, and Ryanair has added a direct domestic route from Marrakech. Check current schedules, as flights are not daily on every route.
  • Getting to Merzouga: there is no public bus from the airport, so book a private transfer or rent a car. The road follows the palm-filled Ziz Valley – a beautiful drive.

Errachidia is the best choice if you want to spend as little time on the road as possible. See our tours from Errachidia.

2. Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ)

  • Distance to Merzouga: about 360 km, around 6 hours.
  • Flights: mainly domestic flights from Casablanca, plus a few seasonal international routes.
  • Getting to Merzouga: the drive passes the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, two of the highlights of southern Morocco. Most travellers make it part of a tour from Ouarzazate.

3. Fes–Saïss Airport (FEZ)

  • Distance to Merzouga: about 470 km, 7–8 hours.
  • Flights: good international connections, including many low-cost flights from Europe.
  • Getting to Merzouga: the road crosses the Middle Atlas cedar forests (look out for Barbary macaques near Azrou) and the Ziz Gorges. Our desert tours from Fez split the journey or go straight to the dunes in one day.

4. Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK)

  • Distance to Merzouga: about 560 km, 9–10 hours of driving.
  • Flights: Morocco’s busiest airport for international flights, with direct routes from across Europe and beyond.
  • Getting to Merzouga: the drive crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass and passes Aït Benhaddou, so it is usually done over two or three days. See our tours from Marrakech.

Which airport should you choose?

  • Shortest transfer: Errachidia.
  • Best international flights: Marrakech or Fez – and the drive becomes part of the adventure.
  • Classic round trip: fly into Marrakech and out of Fez (or the other way round), crossing the desert in between.

Tips for travelling to Merzouga

  • Book flights and transfers early for spring, autumn and holiday periods.
  • Avoid driving mountain roads at night, and allow extra time in winter, when the High Atlas passes can get snow.
  • Plan at least one night in the desert: sunset and sunrise over the dunes are the highlights.
